The candy of our garden are beets. We call them garden candy because our children crave them like sweet treats on the local candy store shelves. Our daughter likes them so much she refuses to grow much else in her personal raised bed. We have to roast or steam up a bunch almost every night!
There is not much to dislike about beets. They are easy to grow, mature rather fast, and come in a variety of colors. Even the tops of the beets are amazingly delicious. Plus, harvested correctly, you can keep picking beet tops while the edible root matures below the soil surface. Talk about bang for your buck!
You may already be sold on growing beets in 2014, “but wait…there’s more”. They only take up a small amount of room in your edible garden and are relatively pest resistant.
This is starting to sound like a late night infomercial. What are you waiting for. Grab the seed catalog, pick 2-3 types of beets to grow, and start dreaming of the most delicious garden candy you can imagine. It will not be long before you and your family are tasting them for real!
