Going with quality over quantity is one of the easiest ways to have a better, more successful, and easier edible garden in the new year. I carry this theme into everything I do in our family edible gardens because I have tried buying more of or less expensive edible gardening supplies and have always been disappointed.
For example, I once purchased 5 garden spades at $1 each so each of our garden beds could have one at the ready. While that was convenient, the spades quickly began folding under the pressures of daily use. The metal was slightly more durable than aluminum foil!
I have also purchased seeds that were at or close to their expiration dates with similar results. The time I spent on seed viability testing and thinning out my over-planted crops was not worth the money I saved on the seeds themselves.
I could go on and on, but I am sure you get the point. I also recommend checking out the DIY Backyard Farm “Product Reviews” page for detailed reviews of some of the products we use here in and around our edible gardens.
