I was inspired to write this post after seeing my Word Press Daily Prompt email today. The one word prompt was, “artificial”. The minute my brain sorted out those 10 letters it clicked! One of the reasons my family and I stay so healthy is because we have nearly eliminated artificial ingredients from our diets.
So how can this tidbit of information help you get healthier instantly?
Right now at this very minute you can make the decision to limit or eliminate artificial ingredients from your diets. While you are at it, keep the ingredient lists short for any meals or snacks you are planning.
How many ingredients can you see in the picture below?
What did you guess? If you guessed one you are wrong. The answer is actually two. Two fresh, delisious and organic goldren raspberries grown right in our backyard.
It might not be raspberry season for much of the world, but most people can grow their own food for many months of the year. When you have a farmer’s market outside your door it is easy to eat natural and keep ingredient lists to a minimum. Check out some scenes from our DIY Backyard Farm.
Winter, spring summer and fall. In our garden we have something for all!
Even if you live in an apartment on the 44th floor you can still keep artificial ingredients to a minimum. Shop carefully, buy fresh, local produce whenever possible and order simply prepared foods when eating out. Are you going to start being healthier in this very instant? Are you inspired to plan a bountiful, edible garden of your own?
Nothing artificial, keep it real and get healthier today!
Impossibly ripe golden raspberries. If you grow these you’ll know exactly what I mean!

No, this is not the title of some kind of crazy sci-fi flick about killer berries from outer space. Actually, sometimes our raspberry and blackberry canes attack us as if they were trying to cause harm. Those thorns can be sharp!
I just built this simple trellis system to help keep those wild and crazy berry plant canes from invading our path. Plus, the trellises offer a great structure to drape bird netting over. Double duty!
A picture is worth a thousand words. So, I do not believe instructions are required. Just be sure to only use wood that is untreated. I used natural cedar wood. Cedar is durable, resists rot fairly well and weathers nicely.
Taming Our Wild Berries
blueberry bush in fall hues
We still have a garden full of wonderful edibles, but I am already thinking about what to grow next season. As I walk around our edible gardens I cannot help myself from stopping and staring at the blueberry bushes in their fall glory. These amazingly gorgeous bushes gave up their berries to us (and the birds) over the summer. However, their true beauty is revealed each fall in the form of their colorful foliage. The leaves are an impossible to imagine fire of reds and oranges! Herein lies the 2-4-1 deal…blueberries give you berries and beauty!
I would grow blueberry bushes even if they did not yield a single berry. In fact, I feel they are much more attractive than virtually any ornamental bush I have seen. Do you grow blueberries? If so, is it because of the berries or the beauty of the foliage???

To grow berries that is! Ever wonder what it would be like to have the sweetest, freshest berries right outside your door? Do you love berries, but can’t stand paying high prices for mostly sub par produce? Ever wonder what chemicals are on the berries you are eating?
Watch the video below if you answered yes to any of those questions or just want to get a quick look at our berry garden.
Berries are a huge hit in our house! There is nothing like a sweet, fresh bunch of berries for dessert (every night)!
